Our latest 2026 assessment of US fleet management companies confirms that Spireon FleetLocate is still one of the strongest options for fast, accurate tracking updates. Its real-time GPS data can refresh as quickly as every 15 seconds, giving dispatchers and managers near-instant visibility over vehicles, trailers, and other high-value assets.

However, Spireon does have some drawbacks, including a lack of automatic route optimization for drivers. In this Spireon review, we look at how well FleetLocate performs across core fleet management tasks, including live tracking and geofencing, driver behaviour monitoring, vehicle maintenance, and compliance.

Spireon Review: Overview with Pros and Cons

To give you an overview of what Spireon could offer your fleet, here’s a summary of its most notable strengths and weaknesses, compared to the competition.

Spireon Review: Interface Layout and Navigation

When you first log in to Spireon’s FleetLocate, you’re taken directly to its Map tab, where all your vehicles and assets appear as pins across the country. This provides an at-a-glance understanding of where everything is, complete with a right-hand sidebar that lists each asset’s status and location in real time.

Though some platforms prefer to drop you into a customizable dashboard or a list of frequently used tools (like GPS Insight), FleetLocate prioritizes immediate visibility of your fleet on a live map (just like Verizon Connect’s Reveal software), which many managers find especially useful for dispatch and rapid decision-making.

On the left side of the interface, you’ll notice a static navigation bar that remains visible regardless of which page you visit. Each section, whether it’s Maintenance, Status, Alerts, or Reports, is clearly labeled with both an icon and text, meaning you’re never left guessing which tool you’re about to open.

The general design is fairly modern and intuitive (although perhaps not to the standard of Verizon Connect’s attractive and noticeably slick multi-tab interface). You can simply click on a label to access that part of the software without sifting through submenus or hidden features.

While some competitors (like Quartix) rely on hover-over submenus to help you jump quickly between sections, FleetLocate’s straightforward menu structure is easy to pick up from day one.

Overall, it’s a clean and functional layout that offers quick, map-based insights while still providing easy access to deeper features like service records, driver behavior reports, and more.

Spireon Review: Key Features

Let’s now consider some of the core features that Spireon has to offer and how they play out when using its software.

Live tracking map and landmarks

Spireon’s map tab provides a real‑time snapshot of your fleet, displaying asset locations on a user-friendly interface. From this page, you can switch between standard and satellite modes to get the level of detail you need, such as identifying street layouts or zooming in on specific points of interest.

You can also filter the list of assets or search for a known address using the bar at the top; once you’ve found a particular location, the system drops a pin for quick reference.

Each asset is represented by an icon for the type of asset, where red shows a stationary/stopped vehicle and green a moving vehicle. There are also listed figures for how long that’s been the case and where the last updated location is.

Spireon’s super-fast 15-second refresh rates come into play here, beating our highest overall scorer Verizon Connect’s 30-second refresh time, and well ahead of providers like RAM Tracking which update every 60 seconds. You can also select to lengthen that to 30 or 60 seconds if you wish, but you’ll get quick updates as things happen no matter which you pick.

When you’re ready to highlight important sites, you can add a landmark (also called a geofence) directly from the map. After pinpointing your address or location, simply select “Add Landmark”. You’ll then name your geofence, optionally add comments or a phone number, and confirm the automatically populated address, latitude, and longitude fields.

From there, you can draw the shape (be it a simple circle or a multi-sided polygon) then pick a line color, thickness, and fill color (along with its transparency). Satellite view is particularly helpful if you want to be precise about capturing entrances and exits around a location. Once you save, your new landmark is instantly visible on the map.

For streamlined management, you can also group multiple landmarks together into a single landmark group. By navigating to the Fleet tab and selecting the Landmark Group subtab, you’ll see existing groups and how many landmarks each contains. Creating a new group is as simple as giving it a name, and then choosing which landmarks to include.

Once you’re done, your landmarks (and any subgroups you’ve created) will appear clearly on the map, allowing you to spot critical activity in and around the locations that matter most to your fleet. None of these features are unique to Spireon. In fact, they have been present on all fleet management software I’ve tested. However, I see no issue in how its map view is employed here.

Maintenance tools

Accessing Spireon’s maintenance module is straightforward. From the maintenance tab, you’ll see a blue indicator that signals an overdue service plan once one exists, and as you complete services the count decreases in real time.

Every asset under a service plan is listed with essential data, asset name, current odometer reading, engine hours, service plan name, and the remaining distance, days, or engine hours until the next scheduled service. When an asset reaches its service threshold, its details turn red as a clear visual cue for immediate action.

To address a service plan, you can simply click the plus icon next to an asset. This opens a detailed screen where you can confirm or adjust the service date, enter the service cost, add notes (such as shop name or oil type), and choose whether to reset the service interval for automatic future reminders or simply log the service without triggering a new alert.

Creating a new service plan is equally intuitive. You can choose to include all assets or select specific ones, assign a plan name, add an optional description, and set reminder criteria based on distance, time, engine hours, or a combination. There’s even an option to set up an advanced “first service” alert so you’re notified ahead of the regular maintenance interval.

Once a service is completed, it moves into the Service Records section, where you can update details like odometer readings, service dates, engine hours, costs, and additional notes. The system also allows you to filter and export records in CSV/Excel format, making it easier to share data outside the platform.

Overall, I’d say Spireon’s maintenance tools are comprehensive and well-integrated. The color-coded indicators and filtering options help quickly identify and prioritize overdue services, while the detailed record-keeping allows for accurate log-keeping.

A more detailed timeline or service history view with more granular time markers might be preferable, rather than just start and end dates, like GPS Insight or Verizon Connect. But all the essential features for keeping operations running smoothly and reducing unexpected downtime are present and correct.

Alerts

Alerts are another area that is given its own billing on Spireon’s left-hand navigation bar. Spireon’s alert system is designed to proactively notify fleet managers about critical events as they happen. This could be for a variety of reasons, such as after-hours movement, doors being opened, HOS or DVIR violations, and more.

All alerts are accessible from the Alerts tab, where you can review, manage, and create various alert types under the alert types subtab. For instance, the Post-It speed limit alert notifies you when a vehicle exceeds a posted speed limit based on accurate data from Google Maps.

You can give each alert a unique name, which can be useful if you plan to create multiple of the same alert type for different drivers or groups, each with its own parameters. After selecting the drivers, vehicles, and assets relevant to the alert, you can add the phone numbers or email addresses of the users who should receive the alert notifications.

These alerts can be scheduled to only be sent at specified time windows (such as your team’s working hours) or if you prefer to receive alerts at any time, simply leave the schedule option unchecked.

It’s worth noting that some alerts are accessible from their respective sections, too, which I think is a logical and welcome move by Spireon. For example, you can access, create, and configure maintenance alerts as part of the maintenance section discussed above. This isn’t always possible with other fleet software I’ve tested, such as RAM Tracking.

Reports

Spireon’s reporting tools give fleet managers an efficient way to gather key insights, including areas such as stop durations, mileage totals, and even fuel card transactions, without the need to sift through raw data.

Namely, there is a Daily Details report to get an overview of a specific workday for your fleet, as well as plenty of more specific options about vehicles, drivers and trips. You can run these reports on demand for an immediate snapshot or schedule them to arrive automatically via email.

To run a report, go to the Reports tab and pick which report type you need, from stops or mileage to fuel exceptions. Next, choose the assets or groups to include, specify a date range, and configure any unique options (for instance, filtering out short stops or including idle time).

Once you click “Generate Report,” the system compiles your data and displays it in a table that you can expand to see group or individual asset details, print, or export as a CSV, PDF, or Excel file.

If you’d like to receive reports regularly, say, a daily stop summary, you can opt to schedule them. After choosing your assets and date range, select “Schedule, Save, and Send” then specify how often you want the report, the format (HTML, CSV, Excel, or PDF), and which email addresses should receive it. That’s more options than most, for instance, Verizon Connect only allows for PDF or CSV.

Fuel card reports can also be set up this way. These include a fuel efficiency report for analyzing miles per gallon, a fuel transaction summary for seeing overall spending and individual purchase details, and a fuel exceptions report to highlight location, capacity, or fuel type discrepancies.

While the data from fuel card providers typically has a short delay (usually one day), the system still presents a consolidated, up-to-date view of your fleet’s fuel usage and costs.

Overall, I’d argue that Spireon offers a solid range of reports, with appealing customization to set them up however and whenever you want.

They don’t look particularly attractive to the eye though, without any colored indicators or modern, curved interface items you might find on Teletrac Navman, Samsara, or Verizon Connect.

Likewise, you’ll have even more reporting options with greater detail on those generally more expensive software packages, too, such as Verizon Connect’s All Faults report for a current maintenance issues overview. But if you want clear numbers with a variety of export options to take crucial data elsewhere, Spireon does a solid job.

Driver Behavior Scorecard

Spireon’s Driver Behavior Scorecard helps fleet managers monitor key driving violations, such as speeding, excessive idling, hard braking, and rapid acceleration, while tailoring how each is weighted.

You begin by enabling or disabling specific violations in the scorecard’s settings, then assigning an importance level (e.g. “very important,” or “not very”) to reflect your fleet’s safety priorities. You can also switch on advanced scoring, which replaces the standard three-tier system with a customizable scoring scale (there’s a help document accessible via the interface to explain this further).

Once your settings are saved, you can view how your drivers are performing on the main scorecard page. Columns can be rearranged by dragging them, much like in a spreadsheet, and you can also choose the time range you want to analyze (e.g. last week, last month, or a custom date range) and whether to group the data by vehicles or by drivers.

When you spot a concerning score, clicking on the driver or vehicle in question allows you to drill down into the specific violations that contributed to it, such as how many times the posted speed limit was exceeded. This view is especially useful for coaching sessions with drivers, allowing you to discuss exactly what impacted their scores and how to improve going forward.

A driver scorecard isn’t a unique feature to Spireon, and I’d say it’s implemented more appealingly with Teletrac Navman, which uses visual cues to indicate performance rather than just a table. However, the inclusion of this feature is still a welcome part of the Spireon package.

ELD and compliance tools

For fleets that need to stay on top of US regulations, Spireon offers dedicated ELD and compliance tools alongside its core tracking features. The FleetLocate Compliance module is designed to help you meet FMCSA requirements, covering electronic logging devices (ELDs), hours-of-service (HOS) monitoring, and driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIR).

Rather than trying to cram everything into the manager interface, Spireon splits responsibilities between the web dashboard and a driver-facing app, FleetLocate Shift.

Drivers use Shift on their mobile devices to record HOS status changes, complete pre- and post-trip inspections, and log any defects, while fleet managers see those logs, alerts, and violations surface inside FleetLocate in near real time. That makes it easier to spot risky patterns, like frequent HOS violations or missed inspections, before they become costly compliance problems.

You can configure rules and alerts around HOS limits, unassigned drive time, and inspection failures, and then feed those into your wider reporting. For long-haul or heavy truck operations that are subject to FMCSA ELD rules, these tools are an important part of making FleetLocate a viable all-in-one system rather than just a location tracker.

However, like most advanced features in the fleet management market, compliance tools are typically sold as an add-on rather than bundled into every Spireon package, so it’s worth confirming exactly what’s included when you request a quote.

Trailer and asset tracking

It’s worth specifying that Spireon isn’t just a vehicle tracker. It also has deep roots in trailer and asset tracking. FleetLocate for Trailer & Asset Managers is built to monitor a wide range of movable equipment, including dry vans, reefers, flatbeds, tankers, chassis, containers, and even smaller assets like converter dollies and site equipment.

From the same FleetLocate interface you use for your trucks, you can see where trailers and assets are, how long they’ve been sitting at a location, and whether they’re moving or idle.

Spireon also offers dedicated hardware and sensors for trailers and assets, so you can track things like power status, cargo load conditions, and door activity depending on the device and package you choose. In some cases, drivers can use a companion app (TrailerView) to pinpoint the exact location of an empty trailer in a yard, saving time and cutting down on frustrating searches.

None of this functionality is unique to Spireon, as most major players in the US fleet market currently offer some form of trailer and asset tracking. But given Spireon’s long history in this area, its trailer tools feel well thought through, and the ability to monitor mixed assets (vehicles, trailers, and equipment) from a single map view is a genuine advantage for busy operations.

Video safety and theft prevention

For fleets that want more than just dots on a map, Spireon offers an optional AI dashcam called CamCoach that plugs directly into FleetLocate.

CamCoach is a dual-camera system that monitors both the road ahead and the cab interior, using AI to flag risky behaviors such as phone use, smoking, distraction, and harsh maneuvers. When it detects an unsafe event, it delivers in-cab audio and visual alerts to the driver, acting as a live coach to encourage safer driving in the moment.

On the manager side, recorded events appear in a dedicated dashcam tab within FleetLocate, with clips and summary data you can use in coaching sessions or investigations. This can help you understand what was really happening on the road, support targeted training, and provide crucial context if you need to defend a driver after a collision or dispute.

CamCoach and advanced security features aren’t typically bundled into basic tracking-only packages, so they’re best thought of as add-ons for fleets that are serious about safety, liability protection, and safeguarding high-value assets. But if you opt for them, they turn FleetLocate from a pure tracking tool into a more rounded risk-management platform.

Spireon Review: Mobile App

Spireon supports its FleetLocate platform with two main apps for mobile: FleetLocate Periscope for managers and FleetLocate Shift for drivers.

FleetLocate Periscope

FleetLocate Periscope is the app you’ll use as a fleet manager or dispatcher. It’s available on both iOS and Android, and acts as a compact version of the FleetLocate dashboard on your phone or tablet.

We found it easy to use and allows you to access information across several different areas, including:

• Real-time GPS tracking, so you can see where vehicles are at any moment
• Ad hoc information on drivers and vehicles while you’re away from your desk
• Alerts for speeding, entering or leaving geofenced locations, and other configured events
• Each driver’s last known location and detailed vehicle status
• Which vehicles are inside or outside specific landmarks

That makes Periscope a useful companion for on-call managers who need to respond to customer queries, check ETAs, or verify where a vehicle was at a particular time, without having to log into the full desktop interface.

FleetLocate Shift (for drivers)

FleetLocate Shift, by contrast, is built for drivers. It’s the mobile companion to FleetLocate Compliance, and lets drivers manage key regulatory tasks such as Hours of Service (HOS), DVIR inspections, and duty status changes from their phone or in-cab tablet.

With Shift, drivers can:

• Log and switch HOS duty status in line with FMCSA requirements
• Complete pre and post-trip DVIRs using a guided, step-by-step workflow
• Submit defect reports and inspection notes electronically
• Sync those logs back to FleetLocate Compliance so managers can see potential violations and issues in one place

Both apps are actively maintained, with recent updates focused largely on bug fixes and performance improvements. Periscope tends to attract stronger user ratings than Shift, reflecting a more polished experience on the manager side, while the driver app is more functional than flashy.

Unlike some rivals that bundle driver and manager tools into a single all-in-one app, Spireon splits responsibilities between Periscope and Shift. This can add a little onboarding complexity at first, but it also means each app is tailored to its audience: Periscope focuses on live visibility and alerts for managers, while Shift handles compliance workflows and inspections for drivers.

Spireon Review: Limited Customer Support

Spireon offers multiple support channels to help fleet managers resolve issues and keep operations running smoothly. In the US, you can reach the support team by phone; FleetLocate vehicle support is available at (877) 819-1449.

Additionally, Spireon supports its customers through email and a robust online resource center featuring help guides, infographics, webinars, blogs, and a comprehensive video library.

Support is primarily available during standard US business hours, according to our research, and some users have noted occasional delays in response times across both email and phone lines. If you need 24/7 support in case of any out-of-hours issues, Verizon Connect, Samsara, Teletrac Navman, and Azuga could all be an option for you.

Spireon provides tailored software packages on a case-by-case basis (as is the industry norm). Prices usually vary depending on fleet size, contract length, and features. Currently, Spireon doesn’t provide its pricing information online.
