CalAmp is a telematics and connected-asset platform for US fleets that need visibility across vehicles, trailers, equipment, cargo, drivers and school transportation.

I’d argue it makes most sense when your fleet is harder to define: trucks, vans, trailers, assets, school buses, rental equipment, public-sector vehicles or mixed field operations. Its strongest features are asset visibility, AI video safety, its CrashBoxx crash intelligence and K-12 transportation tools.

It is not the cleanest choice for a small business that only wants a live map and basic GPS tracking. For that, Azuga, GPS Trackit or Quartix will be easier to price and deploy. Especially since CalAmp covers a lot of ground, but its pricing is quote-based and its product set is less straightforward than those tracking-first providers.

Best for mixed fleets that need to track vehicles, equipment, trailers, cargo or school buses from one telematics ecosystem.

Where CalAmp Stands Out

CalAmp stands out when a fleet needs to track more than vehicles. Its asset tracking tools cover powered and non-powered assets, including trailers, containers, generators, rental equipment and pallets.

That gives CalAmp a clearer role than budget trackers such as RAM Tracking or Quartix. Those systems work well for simple vehicle visibility. CalAmp is better when you need to know where equipment is, how often it is used, when it moves outside agreed areas and whether it is being misused.

CrashBoxx is CalAmp’s most distinctive safety tool. Most fleet platforms can report harsh braking or capture video, but CrashBoxx goes further by helping with crash detection, severity estimation, accident reconstruction and predictive damage reporting. That matters for businesses dealing with claims, liability, downtime and post-incident investigations.

CalAmp Vision adds the video layer. It can capture before-and-after footage of critical driving events, trigger spoken alerts, surface curated videos and support driver coaching.

CalAmp’s K-12 product is also more specific than the school-bus support offered by many general fleet platforms. It includes parent-facing bus tracking through Here Comes The Bus, student barcode or RFID ridership, wrong-stop and duplicate-rider notifications, route comparison, time and attendance, DVIR inspections, work orders and driver safety reports.

Where CalAmp Falls Short

CalAmp is broad, but it is not the most straightforward fleet platform to buy.

Its first weakness is pricing transparency. CalAmp does not publish simple per-vehicle pricing for its main fleet products. That makes it harder to compare with providers such as Azuga, GPS Trackit and Quartix, which give small fleets a clearer starting point.

Its second weakness is mainstream usability positioning. Verizon Connect, Samsara and Teletrac Navman have cleaner buyer stories:

What about LoJack?

US fleet buyers should keep LoJack separate from this CalAmp review. Spireon acquired CalAmp’s LoJack US Stolen Vehicle Recovery business and Spireon holds the exclusive LoJack mark licence in the US and Canada.

That means CalAmp should not be treated as a LoJack-first fleet recovery provider for US businesses. Treat CalAmp as a telematics, asset tracking and crash intelligence provider instead.

Support and Company Context

CalAmp provides product support through its support hub, training resources, system status page and installation guides. Its CalAmp Application support page also lists phone support and a contact form for users of the former iOn platform.

Because CalAmp sells software, hardware and configured telematics deployments, support questions should be specific. Before buying, confirm:

Whether support is 24/7 or business-hours only
Who installs devices and cameras
Whether training is included
How long video and crash data is retained
Whether you get a named account contact

CalAmp also completed a financial restructuring and became a private company owned by Lynrock Lake in August 2024. CalAmp said it emerged with enhanced liquidity and no disruption to operations.

Its most useful features are asset tracking, CrashBoxx crash intelligence, Vision dash cams and K-12 transportation tools. Those features give CalAmp a stronger reason to exist than simple GPS tracking alone.

However, CalAmp is not the best default fleet management recommendation for most US businesses. Verizon Connect is stronger for all-round fleet operations. CalAmp’s biggest weakness is buying clarity. Its pricing is quote-based, its product set is broad, and the right package depends heavily on hardware, software modules and asset type.
