What could be improved about Wix?

Despite Wix’s many accolades, the builder won’t be for everyone. For one, it’s not as adept at creating high-end, professional-looking websites compared with design-focused platforms like Squarespace.

This is because while Wix’s library of templates is much larger (900+ versus 190); all of Squarespace’s themes are highly curated and created by designers, making the builder a better option for restaurants or brands that prioritize sleek designs.

Wix also lags behind some competitors when it comes to mobile responsiveness. Specifically, the builder’s mobile version doesn’t always automatically adapt designs. Sometimes elements can misalign or scale awkwardly when viewed on smaller screens. While users can manually reposition content using its mobile editor, Wix’s templates aren’t responsive by default, like those offered by Shopify or Squarespace.

While Squarespace’s app library isn’t as expansive as Wix’s or Shopify’s, the builder still lets you connect to a wealth of hospitality-focused third-party integrations.

Specifically, the platform integrates with online ordering and delivery platforms like ChowNow, and DoorDash Drive, allowing them to accept pickup and delivery orders directly through their website, without paying third-party commissions.

While Squarespace doesn’t offer reservation management in-house like Wix, the builder does integrate directly with reservation services like OpenTable and Resy, allowing guests to book a table directly through the restaurant’s website.

What could be improved about Squarespace?

While Squarespace lets you sell online, it doesn’t offer a native POS integration for businesses selling in person.

This won’t be an issue for ghost kitchens or other predominantly online food businesses, but it could be a significant drawback for restaurants that want to unify their online and in-person operations. If this is a dealbreaker for you, we’d recommend using Shopify, Wix or even GoDaddy instead.

Also, with Squarespace, lots of advanced restaurant features aren’t available in-house. For example, if you want to integrate online ordering or table booking features in your website, you’ll have to rely on third-party tools, which can take longer to set up, and don’t always sync data seamlessly.

The key advantage of this is speed. When we tested it out for ourselves, we were able to draft a website in just 30 seconds; all we had to do was enter two prompts.

In addition, Hostinger had the fastest site-loading speed of any website builder we tested — a major benefit for restaurants and food vendors that want to keep hungry customers engaged during peak hours.

What could be improved about Hostinger?

Hostinger does let you switch templates after your site is live, unlike Wix. However, once you heavily customize a template, switching to a new one requires you to redo much of the branding and design. This could pose an issue to users who like to experiment with designs and keep the look of their website fresh.

Hostinger also massively lets itself down when it comes to third-party integrations. The platform doesn’t integrate directly with restaurant-specific apps like POS software, reservation tools, or delivery apps like DoorDash or Uber Eats.

What could be improved about Shopify?

Shopify’s recently introduced AI tools have made it a lot easier for users to create websites with the platform. However, compared with competitors like Squarespace and Hostinger, Shopify does have quite a steep learning curve.

For example, its dashboard is packed full with ecommerce lingo restaurateurs might be unfamiliar with – from SKUs to product collections – and the builder doesn’t offer a useful tutorial to guide you through your first steps.

Shopify is also more of an investment than other builders. Its entry-level tier is more than double the price of Hostinger’s, and lots of restaurant-specific features, like table reservations and delivery scheduling, are only available as paid add-ons. Shopify doesn’t let you get started for free like Wix, either, making it less well-suited for budget-conscious food businesses.
