Incorporating AI into website building is now becoming the norm for most of the best website builders, with even holdouts such as Squarespace and Shopify now offering an AI option.I tested several AI website builders to find the best one for US businesses and, based on my research, Wix gets the top spot. It’s not the fastest way to build a website, but it produces some of the best results in terms of design. Plus, on top of its AI website builder, Wix offers a range of other AI tools, including text and image generation.Taking second place is Squarespace, which only launched its AI website builder in late 2024, while Hostinger, an AI-focused website builder, takes the third slot. I’ll get into what each AI website builder has to offer in this article and go over my experience of using them. What are the best AI website builders? Other website builders, such as Hostinger and Shopify, require fewer prompts and suggestions, which speeds up the process. However, this increases the chance that the final product won’t match your expectations.Once you’ve answered Wix’s AI prompts, you’ll be taken straight to the main dashboard in the backend, so you’ll need to select the “website design” option from the “next steps” list in order to generate, see, and edit your AI website, which I didn’t love. Hostinger takes you straight into editing your AI website after you’ve answered the prompts.I liked that Wix's website builder included a "help me answer" prompt. This can help new users learn how to best use the AI chatbot. Source: Expert MarketSelecting the “website design” option will prompt Wix’s AI website builder to generate a site based on the answers you gave it during setup. Wix’s AI builder will then generate a website design for you, and you can relaunch the AI generation process several times until you’re happy with the result. When it comes to the quality of Wix’s AI website designs, I was generally happy with the results. Most were modern-looking, and there was some variety in the templates, even though they were using the same prompts. That said, some of the designs didn’t fit the theme I was looking for. Wix’s AI website builder always seems to include random pictures to decorate the bottom banner, no matter what prompt you’ve given it.I also noticed that Wix’s AI website builder populated my website with some AI-generated images, something it didn’t do when I last tested it a few months ago. Even though the images were high quality and almost photo-real, they still looked fake, and I would have preferred stock images.I found the website designs Wix's AI builder came up with attractive, but I didn't like the inclusion of AI-generated images over stock pictures. Source: Expert MarketOther Wix AI toolsBesides its AI website builder, Wix offers a wide range of other AI-powered tools, more than any website builder on this list. Here they are in full:AI website generatorAI image creator and editorAI writerAI marketing content creatorAI SEO assistantAI help and support chatbotBesides Hostinger, Wix is the only website builder to offer an AI image generator, although Shopify has incorporated AI into image editing. While the results have improved in just a few months as AI gets more sophisticated, I’d still recommend using your own unique images, or at the very least stock images, especially if you’re creating a business website.I also tested out Wix’s AI copywriting tool, which can be used to write copy for your website, including headers and product descriptions. Although I think it can be a good source of inspiration, I’d highly suggest editing the final product. Like most AI-generated copy, it can feel a little bland or clichéd at times. That said, it’s highly useful for basic text like product or video descriptions that don’t require much creativity.Wix is also one of the few website builders, besides GoDaddy, to offer AI-powered marketing content creation, with AI able to create email campaigns, for example. Results are similar in quality to its website template designs. You can use AI to help you write copy for your email campaigns on Wix. Source: Expert Market ▶ Read more: AI and the Future of SEO What else should you know about Wix?AI isn’t the only thing Wix has to offer. It earned the top spot in our review of the best website builders for US businesses thanks to its versatility and integrated marketing and ecommerce tools. On top of its AI website builder, Wix has over 900 templates, far more than the average 150 offered by competitors, and they span a huge number of topics, including ones missing from competitors Squarespace and GoDaddy, such as education.Wix also has a much wider array of built-in tools compared with competitors, which include logo, email campaign, and social post creation tools (only GoDaddy offers a similar selection), and sales tools, including integration with third-party marketplaces and social media. However, Wix doesn’t just have qualities, it has a few faults too. One main drawback of using Wix is that you can’t switch website templates once you’ve published your website, an action all Wix’s competitors let you make. This makes implementing a branding change harder if you’re a business. The Wix platform can also be overwhelming for beginners, since there are so many tools to choose from. Users looking for a simple website builder might prefer Hostinger. Finally, if you run an ecommerce store, you should know that Wix charges a slightly high payment processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 for businesses that choose to process payments with Wix Payments. To get lower fees, you can always process payments through a third-party provider, such as Stripe. 2. Squarespace: Best for Creating a Stunning WebsiteTime to create website with AI: Less than 30 secondsNumber of steps/questions: 6 Squarespace 4.5 Pricing $16-$99/month Try Squarespace Squarespace Review Suitable for Design-focused users Novice users who want an easy-to-use platform Businesses that need strong booking tools Not suitable for Users who prioritise site speed Businesses that already sell in person Users who prefer to use phone-based support Pricing See more See less PlanPrice Basic $16/month Core $23/month Plus $39/month Advanced $99/month Creating a website with Squarespace AICreating a website with Squarespace doesn’t take long, even though there are around six prompts to get through, since most are multiple-choice questions.Squarespace took a while to adopt AI, only launching its AI website builder in late 2024. Unlike competitors Wix and Hostinger, Squarespace also doesn’t push its AI website builder. When I signed up, I was taken to a page with prebuilt templates, and the option to use AI was a very discreet button in the top right corner of the screen. The prompts Squarespace’s AI website builder asks are much more design-focused compared with competitors, asking users to choose a “brand personality” and color palette, for example. It also prompts you to build your homepage by choosing sections from the options Squarespace gives you and, every time you choose one, it gives you a preview of what your website will look like with the section, which I thought was a nice touch.Squarespace's AI website builder has more prompts on design than its competitors, asking users to choose color palettes and fonts. Source: Expert MarketWhen Squarespace’s AI website builder has finished generating your website, you’ll be taken straight to the website editor, something which wasn’t the case with Wix. This makes it easy to get to work personalizing your website. When it comes to the results, I was very impressed with what Squarespace’s AI website builder created. The design was in line with the standard of Squarespace’s prebuilt templates, which means highly modern and polished-looking, with tailored and professional imagery. That said, the stock images Squarespace’s AI builder chose had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of my website. This might have something to do with the fact that the AI prompts were so focused on design that I was never asked what the purpose of my website was.I also wasn’t given the option of generating a new website with AI based on the same prompt, an option most competitors offer. So, if you aren’t easily pleased, I’d suggest skipping the AI and choosing one of Squarespace’s prebuilt templates.Squarespace's AI website builder created a stunning website that was in line with the brand “tone” I wanted, but the content had nothing to do with my business purpose. Source: Expert MarketOther Squarespace AI toolsBesides its AI website builder, Squarespace’s only other AI tool is its AI writer, making it the website builder with the fewest AI tools on this list. However, the AI writer is quite versatile, capable of drafting both long and short copy for your website or blog, and even creating product descriptions for an online store. When it comes to the quality of the writing, it’s about what you’d expect from AI – not particularly inspiring. Squarespace’s AI writer also has a tendency to draft long pieces of copy over short ones. This isn’t ideal when you’re using it to write product descriptions or blurbs, and it meant I had to ask the AI writer to shorten the copy on several occasions.Additionally, although Squarespace states that its AI writer can be used to write copy for email marketing campaigns, I wasn’t able to use it to create new content, only edit existing content.Squarespace's AI writer is versatile, but I didn't like that it always crafted very long pieces of copy, even for simple tasks such as product descriptions. Source: Expert MarketWhat else should you know about Squarespace?Squarespace’s strong suit is its stunning website designs, making it the number one option for aesthetics-focused users and businesses, such as fashion retailers or photographers. You’ll get a high-quality website whether you use the AI builder or a preexisting template.Despite this, Squarespace is also relatively easy to use as a platform. It’s easy to customize a template while still maintaining a cohesive layout on Squarespace, compared with other website builders, since its drag-and-drop editor has a unique grid layout, making it easy to align elements. It’s also got a particularly great set of booking management tools. With Squarespace, you’ll get access to its Acuity app, a dedicated scheduling software that allows you to create a customized bookings page, set availability for different staff and across different locations, and send automated reminders to clients, among other features. And, of course, Squarespace has ecommerce tools, which means clients can pay online and even store credit card information for next time. However, like all website builders, Squarespace has its weak points. For one, it didn’t perform well in our site speed tests, perhaps due to its high volume of content and imagery. A slow-to-load website can be irritating for customers and cause them to leave before completing a purchase or booking.Although it has ecommerce tools, Squarespace doesn’t offer any card machines or POS hardware for selling in-person. This isn’t a requirement of a website builder, but competitors Wix, Shopify, and even GoDaddy now all offer equipment for selling in person. 3. Hostinger: Most Affordable AI Website BuilderTime to create website with AI: Less than 30 secondsNumber of steps/questions: 2 Hostinger 4.2 Pricing $2.99-$13.99/month Try Hostinger Hostinger Review Suitable for Users looking for a cheap website builder Novice users who need a simple-to-use builder Businesses that need AI help writing website content Not suitable for Businesses that need strong booking management tools Users that want built-in marketing tools Large ecommerce stores with a range of products Pricing See more See less PlanPrice Premium Website Builder $2.99-$11.99/month, depending on billing cycle Business Website Builder $3.99-$13.99/month, depending on billing cycle Creating a website with Hostinger AICreating a website with Hostinger’s AI tool is very quick. It takes under 30 seconds, and you only need to answer two prompts, a much faster process than with rivals Wix or Squarespace.Hostinger also pushes its AI builder onto users more than its competitors. When I signed up for Hostinger, I was immediately prompted to create a website using Hostinger’s AI website builder, and not given the alternative of choosing a preexisting template, something most competitors offer. That said, I liked the fact that I was able to get a Hostinger website set up with AI by completing two simple prompts, stating my business’s name and describing its purpose. I also liked that I was taken straight to my AI-generated website design, instead of to the main backend, as was the case with Wix, after answering the prompts.I was impressed by how clean and modern Hostinger's AI-generated websites looked. Source: Expert MarketWhen it comes to the results, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the designs Hostinger’s AI builder created. They were visually appealing and looked modern. This is a massive improvement from when I tested Hostinger’s AI website builder a year ago, when the website it generated looked quite dated and was filled with odd AI imagery.Hostinger’s AI builder also gives users the option to generate a new website if they aren’t happy with the first draft, although the results look quite similar. Wix’s AI builder was capable of generating a range of diverse websites based on the same prompt. That said, I did like how easy Hostinger made it to switch between different versions of the AI website drafts, thanks to a toggle. This means that users can always go back to the initial version of the website if they decide it’s the best option.Other Hostinger AI toolsEven though it markets itself as an AI-first website-building platform, Hostinger doesn’t have as many AI tools as competitors Wix or GoDaddy, although that’s partially because it has fewer built-in tools in general. Here’s what AI tools you do get:AI writerAI image creatorAI SEO assistantWhat sets Hostinger’s AI writer apart from the AI writers offered by other website builders is that it can produce lengthy pieces of writing based on short prompts, and can even be used to write entire blog articles. Most competitors’ AI writers are designed for crafting short-form copy. However, as with most AI writing tools, the quality of the material is very generic. I would recommend using it as a starting point, but editing the writing before publishing it.Like Wix, Hostinger also offers an AI image creator, one of the few website builders to offer this tool. As with Wix, the quality of Hostinger’s AI images has improved a lot since I tested it a year ago, reflecting the general improvement that AI imagery has undergone in the past year. The images look a lot more realistic and less cartoonish than they used to.That said, I highly recommend you use original imagery on your website, especially for a product you sell or when showcasing your offices.Hostinger's AI writer is capable of drafting entire sections, not just short paragraphs. Source: Expert MarketWhat else should you know about Hostinger? With prices ranging from $2.99 to a maximum of $13.99 per month, Hostinger is the most affordable website builder on this list. You can technically get cheaper with a free plan from Wix and GoDaddy, but the cost of upgrading with these website builders is higher than it is with Hostinger.Additionally, the massive improvement in the quality of Hostinger’s AI-generated websites and the overall simplicity of the builder and editor make it a great choice for users looking to create a website quickly. It’s a particularly good option for users interested in creating a blog, since Hostinger’s editor has a dedicated button for this in the editor’s sidebar menu that, when selected, creates a whole new blogging section filled with blank entries. Hostinger’s AI writer can also speed up the process of creating content to fill the blog with. However, there are some downsides to using Hostinger. For one, Hostinger doesn’t have many built-in tools, and is missing marketing tools, for example, which are offered by competitors Wix, GoDaddy, Shopify, and Squarespace. On top of this, since Hostinger doesn’t have an app market, you can’t make up for this by integrating third-party marketing apps into the website.Add to this the fact that Hostinger has a 500-product limit on its only ecommerce plan and limited shipping tools (there’s no integration with third-party shipping apps), and it’s not the best option for online sellers looking to grow their ecommerce business. A great alternative is Shopify, which has no product limit and plentiful integrations with marketplaces and shipping apps. Ask the ExpertWe sat down with Lucy Carney, deputy editor at Website Builder Expert, who’s been testing and writing about website builders for over six years. Is the addition of AI a good thing? Does it make website builders easier to use?“I would say overall AI is a good thing for the website builder industry, particularly for beginners who are in the first steps of setting up their online presence. AI setup reduces a lot of the obstacles faced by first-time builders – not knowing where to start, what features they need, which layout is best, and so on.“However, you have to be wary of builders jumping on the AI bandwagon without having put the work in behind the scenes. We see some builders claiming to be ‘AI website builders’ when they’re not. Or, they’re glitchy and offer poor results. I’ve also tested builders where it’s clear that they’ve put a lot of effort into their AI features, but seem to have neglected some of the basic standard features, so you end up with an easy-to-use website builder that lacks depth of features, and scalability as a result.“My advice is always to test out a website builder on a free basis before committing, and always edit whatever the AI tool gives you – this goes for site design as well as text.” 4. Shopify: Best for Running an Online StoreTime to create website with AI: Less than 30 secondsNumber of steps/questions: 1 Shopify 4.1 Pricing $29-$2,300/month Try Shopify Shopify Review Suitable for Users who need a platform they can scale up with Businesses that require strong shipping features Users who want more control over the mobile site Not suitable for Novice business owners with limited tech skills Design focused users that want creative freedom Users who want advanced AI tools Pricing See more See less PlanPrice Basic $29/month Grow $79/month Advanced $299/month Plus $2,300/month Creating a website with Shopify AIIt’s very quick to create a website using Shopify’s new AI website builder, since it only requires you to answer one prompt describing what your online store sells. The process of accessing Shopify’s AI website builder is very different to its competitors, since Shopify doesn’t push users towards it.You first have to set up your Shopify store, and once you’ve been taken to the main dashboard in the backend, then you can go to the “Online Store” tab, from which you’ll be given the option to create a store using Shopify’s AI website builder tool or to choose a pre-built theme. The option for building a website with AI is so discreet that you might miss it.I was impressed by the diversity of the websites generated by Shopify's AI builder. Source: Expert MarketShopify’s AI website builder differed slightly from the others I tested, since it generated three different themes for me to choose from, instead of one like most competitors. As with most AI website builders, I also had the option to relaunch the AI builder as many times as I liked. What impressed me the most was how diverse the website designs the AI builder generated were. That said, I did feel that Shopify’s themes weren’t quite as eye-catching as the ones created by competitors Wix or Squarespace. Shopify is definitely a sales-tools first, design-second platform, but the launch of its AI website builder has made it a more user-friendly option.Other Shopify AI toolsShopify, unlike Wix or GoDaddy, hasn’t incorporated AI into all of its features, reserving it for key content creation steps only. Here’s what you get access to:AI writerAI image editorAI help and support chatbotShopify’s writer can’t write lengthy paragraphs, but it can be used for short-form content, including product descriptions, headings, website content, and meta content. I was quite impressed with this tool since all it needed was key information about the product to craft an enticing description, and I appreciated the fact that it gave clear instructions for what should be included in the prompt.Shopify is also one of the few platforms, besides Wix, to introduce AI to its image editing tools, allowing users to use AI to easily remove backgrounds. Unlike Wix, however, Shopify doesn’t offer an AI image generator. That said, Shopify does offer an AI Sidekick assistant that can help businesses think up FAQs for their website, and offer general advice on how to make the most of Shopify’s tools. Given that Shopify’s backend can be confusing to navigate, the AI assistant is a great tool to speed up the learning process.I was impressed with Shopify's AI product description writer. All it needed were key specs to write a comprehensive description. Source: Expert MarketWhat else should you know about Shopify? What sets Shopify apart from the other website builders on this list is that it’s specifically an ecommerce platform. You can start selling on any Shopify plan, whereas the competitors on this list have dedicated ecommerce plans, but also offer plans without sales tools. If you’re serious about selling online and growing your ecommerce business, we recommend Shopify above all other platforms.A Shopify store can manage high volumes of stock, assist in shipping, promote your products, and link with review sites to showcase your customers sharing their love for your brand. Plus, you’ll get access to a massive app store with over 8,000 apps to help you develop your online store.Shopify also offers fully fledged POS software and hardware, earning it a spot on our list of the best retail POS systems, something rivals Wix and GoDaddy’s basic POS systems didn’t achieve. However, like all website builders, there are downsides to Shopify. For one, it’s not a great option for novice users looking for a simple website, since Shopify’s backend is packed full of features, which can be overwhelming. It’s also more functionality-focused than it is design-focused, which means its website designs aren’t always very original or unique-looking. For a creative-friendly option, we recommend Squarespace. Finally, Shopify is the most expensive website builder on this list. If you’re looking for a cheap way to sell online, you could consider Hostinger. However, if you’re serious about ecommerce, Shopify is worth the price. 5. The overall process is a little faster than when using Wix’s AI builder, but slower than when I tested newcomer Hostinger’s AI builder.Once you’ve answered GoDaddy’s prompts about the purpose of your website and what type of business you want to create, GoDaddy’s AI builder generates a website in a few seconds and takes you straight to the editor. This means you don’t need to go digging in the backend to find your design, as is the case with Wix.The website GoDaddy's AI builder created matched what I had in mind, although it was quite generic. Source: Expert MarketOverall, I was pleased with the results of GoDaddy’s AI website builder. The website matched what I had in mind, although it wasn’t the most inspiring or unique design. My one complaint was that I couldn’t figure out how to make the AI assistant generate an alternative design based on the same prompt. This is something I was able to do easily with most competitors, but with GoDaddy I was instead directed to choose from preexisting templates if I wasn’t happy with the initial results.Other GoDaddy AI toolsLike Wix, GoDaddy offers a variety of built-in tools, and it has incorporated AI into most of them. With GoDaddy you’ll get an:AI writerAI marketing content creatorAI SEO assistantAI help and support chatbotWhen I tested GoDaddy’s AI email marketing campaign creator, I noticed that, while the text was more or less reflective of my stated aim, the images the AI bot chose were not. I wanted to create an email campaign promoting my spa, but the images the AI bot chose showed construction workers. That said, I did appreciate the fact that AI on GoDaddy extends beyond marketing content creation, and can be used to create a marketing content planner, and generate service listings for service-based businesses.GoDaddy also has an AI writer that can be used to write copy for emails and social posts, and general website copy. Like most AI writers, the copy GoDaddy’s AI bot produces generally matches the prompt you give it, but it can be a bit boring. It also can’t produce longer pieces of writing, such as blog articles or a lengthy “About Us” page. If you need a website builder with a more powerful writing tool, I recommend Hostinger.GoDaddy's AI writer can produce short-form copy, but I suggest sprucing it up before publishing. Source: Expert Market ▶ Read more: The Importance of Local SEO What else should you know about GoDaddy?GoDaddy has been dethroned by Hostinger as the fastest and easiest way to build a website, but it’s still an incredibly user-friendly and fast tool.Add to that the fact that it has similar built-in marketing tools to Wix, and it’s a happy medium for users who want an easy-to-use website builder with plenty of features. Like Wix, GoDaddy offers an extensive set of marketing content creation tools, including a logo, email campaign, and social media post creator.Another GoDaddy strong suit is its booking management tools. Businesses can use GoDaddy to create a custom bookings page, manage availability, and accept both group and one-to-one appointments. Plus, you can use AI to speed up the process of listing your services on your website. There are some downsides to GoDaddy. The biggest one is probably that GoDaddy websites may lack originality and can look outdated if you don’t give them that personal touch. This is true for its AI-generated websites as well as its prebuilt templates.GoDaddy also doesn’t have an app market, limiting the number of third-party apps you can integrate into your website to enhance its functionality. For a big selection of integrations, we recommend Wix or Shopify. Are AI Website Builders Worth it?AI website builders are definitely worth it if you’re looking to design a website quickly. They remove the hassle of having to sift through a library of prebuilt templates to find the perfect fit, and then having to make tweaks to your template to get a unique website. They’re an especially good option if you have limited experience with website builders and need support creating a site, since most AI website builders will help you choose and create sections and pages based on your website’s purpose. That being said, it’s always a good idea to edit the content your AI builder creates, whether that’s a website template or any other content, such as copy or images. It’s a slim chance that the website the AI builder creates will perfectly match your needs, so you’ll probably want to do this anyway.Additionally, if you’re creating a website for professional or business purposes, you’ll want to avoid your website being filled with AI-generated copy that’s irrelevant, or uncanny AI images. If you’re a seasoned website creator, you might not want to bother with AI and use the traditional route of choosing a prebuilt website template, or even building a design from scratch. Our Methodology: How Did We Test AI Website Builders? We tested and researched 16 market-leading website builders, evaluating their functionality, usability, integrations and customer support so we can make the most useful recommendations to US businesses. Our rigorous testing process means these products have been scored and rated in six main categories of investigation and 33 subcategories. We then gave each category score a “relevance weighting” to ensure the product's final score perfectly reflects the needs and requirements of Expert Market readers. Our main testing categories for website builders are:Website features: The capabilities and functionalities offered by a website builder, e.g. blog functionality, SEO capability, marketing capacity, and AI tools.Design functionality: The aesthetic appeal and visual layout of a website created using a website builder. It encompasses aspects such as page templates, customizable themes, and content display tools (accordions, tabs, etc.).Ease of use: How user-friendly and intuitive a website builder is for people with varying levels of technical expertise.Value for money: The balance between the cost of a website builder and the benefits it provides. It considers factors such as pricing plans, subscription models, and available features.Reputation: External customer opinion; the feedback and ratings given by customers who have used a particular website builder – the market position and reputation a website builder holds.Help and support: The assistance and resources available to users when they encounter issues or need guidance while using a website builder. This can include tutorials, knowledge bases, and email or chat support. Verdict The overall best AI website builder is Wix. It comes not only with an AI website builder but also a host of additional AI tools, such as text and image generation, so you can feel supported throughout the creation process. That said, it’s not the fastest way to build a website, so if you’re looking for speed, Hostinger or GoDaddy might be better options. If you’re focused on creating a highly aesthetic website, Squarespace’s newly-launched AI website builder is up to the task, while Shopify’s AI builder offers a simple, no-nonsense approach for businesses interested in building an online store.Just remember, no AI website builder is perfect, and the time-saving benefits of automation can leave accuracy at the door. That’s why it’s a good idea not to put all your faith in AI and edit and proofread your website before you publish it.
