Best benefits for large businesses

While AGL does offer a nice and affordable plan for smaller businesses (which we detail in the price plan section below), its unique big business functionalities make it a good shout for those larger companies. The AGL PUMP platform, for example, is for businesses with an energy consumption of more than 5GWh per year. Through this platform, you can manage your own energy purchasing, and lock in your energy prices for a quarter, calendar year, or financial year. Businesses with multiple sites can also use AGL for Business, a portal that enables you to easily manage every site’s energy usage, bills, and reports, in one place.

Just 10% of AGL’s energy comes from renewable sources (wind, hydro, and solar, to be specific). The remaining 90% comes from coal and gas, with coal accounting for a whopping 84%. AGL has extensive investments in coal seam gas (CSG), as well as fracking, a controversial and environmentally harmful process. All that said, it’s worth knowing that AGL’s product is carbon neutral.

Biggest discounts

Alinta Energy’s comparably cheap sample quote of $4,988 per year immediately drew our attention, especially since Alinta is the only supplier on this list to offer up an annual quote that comes in below $5,000. Much of this affordability comes down to the hefty 31% discount (almost a third!) that the company offers to new business customers based in New South Wales. Alinta doesn’t specify how long this discount lasts for, so we’d advise confirming that with Alinta if you’re interested in this plan.

Did You Know?

The majority of business energy suppliers offer at least one plan with a discount for new customers. This discount will be presented as a certain percentage off the reference price – in other words, a certain percentage off the rates you’d usually pay on that plan.

These discounts usually last for your first year on the plan. Your supplier will call this your “benefit period”. There’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of a chunky discount, but just make sure that you can afford to pay the undiscounted rates once your benefit period is up – or make sure you’ll have the contractual freedom to switch to a different, cheaper supplier at that point.

Remember, the bigger the discount now, the bigger the price increase when your benefit period comes to an end.

Cheapest general usage rate

Charging just 21.33 cents per kWh of electricity at the time of this writing, Momentum’s Self Serve business energy plan – designed for small businesses – boasts the cheapest usage rate on this list. If you’re looking to pay as little as possible (and who isn’t?), it’s definitely a plan worth investigating – but just be wary that Momentum’s daily supply charge is edging towards the pricier end of the scale.

Momentum’s energy sources

Momentum may be owned by Hydro Tasmania, a major, government-owned generator of renewable energy, but Momentum itself sources its energy from the National Electricity Market (NEM). Given that the NEM provides an undefined mix of renewable and non-renewable energy, it’s impossible to say how much of Momentum’s energy is clean and green. The company does boast low emissions, but its product is not carbon neutral.

In case you couldn’t tell from the name, Simply Energy aims to make paying for business energy simpler – and that comes through in its unique offering. If your business has a smart meter, Simply Energy will send you a weekly email that summarises your energy consumption, meaning no more nasty surprises when the bill comes – and, if you use dedicated accounting software like Xero or MYOB, Simply can provide e-bills that can be directly uploaded to it. With an average customer score of 3.9 out of 5, Tango has the happiest customers on this list (aside from Powershop, which has also earned an average of 3.9, but from fewer reviewers). In particular, Tango customers praise the company’s award-winning, Australia-based customer service team. According to a survey from Choice, Tango’s team answers 80% of phone calls within just 30 seconds, while only 0.8% of its customers lodged complaints between 2019 and 2020. Of course, Tango does have the smallest customer base on this list (it serves just over 60,000 customers across Australia), which might well go some way to explaining the attention and care it’s able to give to its users.
