Point of sale activation is a retail technology system which allows retailers to provide prepaid products on demand via a wireless terminal. This can be done without the retailer needing to carry inventory, thereby reducing their upfront costs and risk of theft.
The main uses for the system would be to allow customers to pay bills or purchase prepaid air time for cellular phones.
Point of sale activation allows retailers to provide a greater range of services whilst also allowing customers more flexibility and convenience in the way they are able to purchase these services.
However, despite the advantages listed above many people are in agreement that point of sale activation cards are highly likely to decline and disappear. Industry experts expect that this will be replaced by a newer technology known as "Print to Receipt" (PTR) download codes. When this is integrated into a retailer's current POS system, a unique code will be printed onto the receipt.
Advantages of the PTR software over the point of sale activation cards are that this is extremely easy to implement and is a low cost solution.
