A Brief History of Comdial
Comdial has a long history. Established in 1977 as a telecommunications research company located in Oregon, the firm grew to be one of the largest producers of business telephone systems in the USA.
Their success peaked during the 1990's, then, in 2005, due to an imminent threat of bankruptcy, Comdial was purchased and taken over by Vertical Communications.
Between the inception of Comdial and its present day amalgamation with Vertical Communications, there have been many changes which are briefly outlined as follows:
1982 - The company acquired Telephone System Center Inc in Charlottesville VA, a division of General Dynamics involved in the design and production of telephone systems.
1983 - Acquisition of four other companies, including American Phone Centers and Scott Technologies Corporation, took place.
1984 - Focus was redirected towards business telephone systems.
1991 - Comdial became a leader and pioneer in CTI (Computer Telephony Integration).
1992 - Comdial introduced to the market the DXP, a digital switch compatible with analog and digital phone systems.
Comdial at its height had a large network of authorized dealers selling phone systems and PBX (Private Branch Exchange) to small businesses.
Comdial have manufactured many business systems, but to put it simply, there have been three principal systems, the oldest being the Executech system, followed by the Impact DSU/ DSU II and the DX 80 and 120.
Discontinued and Refurbished Comdial Business Telephone Systems
Due to Comdial's history of success and its subsequent takeover by Vertical Communications, some of their products have been discontinued. These include:
- DSU and DSU II business phone systems
- Concierge FXT/S, Unisyn business phone systems for hotels and hospitality services
- Digitech and Executech
Some business phone retailers sell refurbished Comdial digital phone systems that are no longer in production, for example Business Telephone Sales in Southwestern Florida have a large selection of refurbished Comdial products. However, as Comdial have manufactured numerous phone systems, it is important to take into account the compatibility of handsets and accessories to be utilized.
