Lytx was founded as DriveCam in 1998. Headquartered in San Diego, California and employing more than 300 people, the company is testament to the fact that good things can come from inauspicious beginnings. In this case, the company was a direct outgrowth of a road rage incident involving one of the company's founders. In response, DriveCam was founded to keep drivers safer.
In the years since, its mission and client base have expanded. What began as a consumer-centered company would soon be associated with fleet management and risk management services across a wide range of industries.
While DriveCam was initially positioned as a consumer product, its commercial applications quickly became apparent. Today, Lytx's DriveCam can be found on thousands of vehicles operated by nearly a thousand clients spanning mass transportation (Greyhound, NJ Transit, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority), waste management (Waste Connections Inc, Waste Management), food service (G&C, Kuna), natural gas (AmeriGas), military (the United States Marine Corps), and state and federal governments (the city of Mobile, Alabama, and the United States Department of State) among others.
DC Enterprise is Lytx's business product suite. Its aim is to save money for fleets by providing video and data feedback on driver behavior to improve driver safety and performance. It gives fleet managers the tools to reward exceptional drivers and to take action to improve the driving records for those whose driving shows a need for improvement. This is done via the Lytx safety score, a system designed by statisticians and backed by millions of driving hours to take the guesswork out of driver scoring and evaluation.
The DC Protect and DC Highway programs are algorithm-driven to ensure consistency, but they're also built on an open API to ensure smooth integration with proprietary and third-party fleet management systems. Designed with fleet management in mind, they are cloud based, ensuring safety, security, confidentiality, and full 24/7 access. In addition to ensuring consistent uptime, this also alleviates updating and security concerns.
How It Works

|Video Event Recorder: This recorder, which is mounted in the cab or on the windshield, captures incident-specific video of the driver and their surroundings for 12-second increments (8 seconds before and four seconds after an incident). This video is combined with telematics (location, speed, direction), mapping (to show clusters of events) and analytics to predict and prevent high-risk behavior.|
|DriveCam Online: This cloud-based application shows data on critical activities by driver or for the fleet as a whole, and pairs that information with mapping capabilities, email alerts, and suggested coaching action plans that improve driver outcomes.|
|Reporting Utilities: The reports delivered by the online dashboard are widely varied. There are the expected fleet management components (fuel management, real-time tracking, navigation, trip histories) and compliance data reporting through the proprietary RAIR system. However, the centerpiece of DriveCam is its incident-based reporting, which provides video from potential safety incidents (speeding, hard braking, erratic driving, collisions) that is collected as it happens for later analysis and action.|
What's more, the predictive algorithms and scoring methodologies are continually updated based on driver data from hundreds of customers that represent hundreds of thousands of drivers, ensuring that drivers and fleet managers benefit from the latest research and methodology.
DriveCam captures driver behavior data in real time which is then uploaded via wireless network. The data is then available for review by a fleet manager, who can analyze and score the data and reports. This data can then be shared with drivers via an in-cab alert system or leveraged to better train drivers, who can then model better driving behaviors on the road.
The DriveCam system is designed as a continual feedback loop, allowing constant monitoring by fleet managers, and continual opportunities for improvement on the part of drivers. In this way, better driving practices can be reinforced and rewarded, while risky behaviors can be remedied before they become major issues. This lowers insurance costs, improves CSA BASICs compliance, and is a hedge against false insurance and liability claims.
Lytx offers dedicated account management in addition to 24/7 technical support for its DriveCam, Commercial Fleet, and RAIR customers through email and by phone (toll-free). The company's dealer network provides repair service for their event recorders whether they are in or out of warranty.
City of Mobile, Alabama
The city of Mobile hoped to cut its accident rate among its garbage trucks and DPW vehicles. The DriveCam system delivered by helping the city focus on small, but vital, indicators. The scoring and coaching data provided by DriveCam helped the city to address drivers' unsafe driving habits.
Seat belt use went up, use of mobile phones by city drivers plummeted, and at-fault accidents involving city vehicles fell from 26 to 10 in the year following. While many drivers initially resisted implementation, they soon found that the video evidence provided by the DriveCam system helped protect them ("There was no more 'he said, she said,'" as one city official put it). It also reduced the city's liability exposure significantly.
Schupan and Sons
This well-established scrap metal recycler found that fleet safety was declining and taking the company's CSA scores with it, but could not figure out why. The company implemented the DC Protect program in hopes of improving their scores and their safety, while also safeguarding the company's reputation in the community.
Schupan leveraged the reporting and metrics from the DriveCam Online platform to target drivers in need of improvement to deliver tailored coaching that soon had the fleet back up to speed. The company's safety score improved by 35%, representing lives and property protected.
Safety is a top-of-mind concern for many drivers. For fleet managers, who deal with multiple drivers -- sometimes hundreds, or even thousands, of them -- on a daily basis, those concerns are greatly multiplied.
